Abstract

This contribution investigates the role of the screenshot as a foundational gesture from which two central visual practices in contemporary videogame culture emerge: in-game photography and machinima. Through a theoretical analysis structured around recurrent key terms - definition, recognition, remediation, authenticity, appropriation, and authorship - the article demonstrates how these aesthetic forms arise from the interaction between player and digital environment, transforming the game space into a creative laboratory. In-game photography suspends the flow of action to produce images that oscillate between simulation and reality; machinima extends this logic into the temporal dimension, constructing hybrid narratives that draw from cinema, performance, and videogames. The case studies West of Here (2021) by Leonardo Magrelli and Grand Theft Hamlet (Grylls, Crane, 2023) highlight how Grand Theft Auto constitutes a privileged ground for exploring the artistic potential of virtual worlds, interrogating both the status of the digital image and the shifting boundary between the real and the simulated.
