Olfatto accademico vs. sensibilità naturista: stili medici a confronto

On the basis of the vertical stratification of specialized languages, this paper will consider two contrasting examples that represent, on one hand, communication between experts and, on the other, scientific divulgation addressing a wider public. The similar topic dealt with (i.e. olfactory sense) will enable us to evaluate the expressive peculiarities of the two texts through a detailed comparison between the hyper-specialized academic style of the first, and the almost literary traits of the other, which will turn out to be in some aspects, very dissimilar to the features generally associated with scientific-argumentative prose. Lastly, we shall pose the question of whether such different linguistic styles are actually attributable not only to the targeted recipients, but also, and mostly to the different medical assumptions they are based on. A partire dalla stratificazione verticale dei linguaggi specialistici, l’articolo prenderà in esame due esempi opposti, scelti in quanto rappresentativi l’uno della comunicazione tra esperti, l’altro della divulgazione scientifica destinata a un pubblico più ampio. La tematica affine (l’olfatto) consentirà di valutare le peculiarità espressive dei due testi, tramite un confronto serrato fra lo stile iperspecialistico del primo, di stampo accademico, e i tratti quasi letterari del secondo, che si riveleranno per taluni aspetti poco in linea con le caratteristiche generalmente attribuite alla prosa scientifico-argomentativa. Ci si chiederà infine se questi stili linguistici così differenti non siano in realtà riconducibili, oltre che ai destinatari, anche e soprattutto ai diversi assunti medici che vi stanno alla base.
