Diametrically bridged calix[4]arenes at the upper rim with molecular units bearing a xylyl or a 2,4-hexadiynyl mojety have been synthesized. The shape, rigidity and chemical structure of the bridge determine the host-guest complexation properties of these systems towards neutral molecules in the gas-phase.
