This essay explores one of the least known aspects of Cesare Arici (1782-1836)’s imitation of Virgil. After composing didactic poems and while considering translating all Virgil’s works, Arici set out to write the (incomplete) epic poem La Gerusalemme distrutta, which imitates the Aeneid both thematically and stylistically.
