This paper investigates the archaeology of water along the via Aemilia, comparing the towns of Romagna and Emilia in their relationship with rivers, canals and inland waterways. Drawing on ancient topography and geomorphology, it examines water as a factor of urban planning, defence, drainage and navigation, and as an expression of urbanitas. A second focus addresses water-supply structures, comparing the aqueducts of Imola and the Bidente valley with those of Bologna, Modena, Reggio, Parma and Piacenza. The result is an environmental gradient that, within a water heritage perspective, links choice of source, building technique and the hydrographic setting of the region

Abstract
This paper investigates the archaeology of water along the via Aemilia, comparing the towns of Romagna and Emilia in their relationship with rivers, canals and inland waterways. Drawing on ancient topography and geomorphology, it examines water as a factor of urban planning, defence, drainage and navigation, and as an expression of urbanitas. A second focus addresses water-supply structures, comparing the aqueducts of Imola and the Bidente valley with those of Bologna, Modena, Reggio, Parma and Piacenza. The result is an environmental gradient that, within a water heritage perspective, links choice of source, building technique and the hydrographic setting of the regionI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
