Drawing on a qualitative metasynthesis of international studies, this paper explores the experiences and perceptions of people of migrant descent (PMD) concerning psychological distress and access to mental health support. Using an interpretative sociological approach, mental health is understood as the outcome of processes of othering and racialization that affect social recognition and access to care. Findings highlight that stigma, cultural barriers, and the lack of inter cultural competence among professionals hinder service use, while family, religious, and community networks act as resilience resourc es. The study calls for a broader understanding of mental health as an interactional field shaped by psychological, social, and cultural factors, and advocates for more inclusive and culturally sensitive care practices.

Abstract
Drawing on a qualitative metasynthesis of international studies, this paper explores the experiences and perceptions of people of migrant descent (PMD) concerning psychological distress and access to mental health support. Using an interpretative sociological approach, mental health is understood as the outcome of processes of othering and racialization that affect social recognition and access to care. Findings highlight that stigma, cultural barriers, and the lack of inter cultural competence among professionals hinder service use, while family, religious, and community networks act as resilience resourc es. The study calls for a broader understanding of mental health as an interactional field shaped by psychological, social, and cultural factors, and advocates for more inclusive and culturally sensitive care practices.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
