This paper argues that Ovid, Met. X 86-108 and Statius, Theb. VI 90-107 were the classical models for Petrarch, Epyst. Abstract

This paper argues that Ovid, Met. X 86-108 and Statius, Theb. VI 90-107 were the classical models for Petrarch, Epyst. II 16, 24-29 (locus amoenus of Selvapiana), and that by means of the first model Petrarch, just when he describes his discovery of Selvapiana in this passage, he presents himself as a new Orpheus, who does not create the woodland of Selvapiana out of nothing, but he transforms the simple wood of Selvapiana into a nemus, the sacred wood of poetry.
