The political paradigm of «mixed government» and «mixed constitution» has char- acterized the history of European and Western political thought, starting from its development within Greek culture, both in the Classical and Hellenistic periods, and reaching Rome through the historical-political reflection of Polybius, which was later taken up and reworked by Cicero in De re publica. The article aims to trace some of the main stages of this historical-conceptual path through the authors who were among its major protagonists, then focusing on Cicero’s reworking of the «mixed constitution» model, which offers particularly original insights compared to the Greek tradition and especially to Polybius.
