Background: Clinical placements are crucial in nursing education, acting both as a strategic tool and a preferred learning method. The integration of theoretical knowledge with clinical training is believed to improve care quality, conducive to the widespread adoption of models based on Dedicated Education Unit (DEU). These models promote innovative methods for developing effective learning environments. Aim: This study assesses the impact of the Learning Care Units (LCUs) project on the quality of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students’ clinical experiences enrolled at the University of Parma. Methods: the LCU project was implemented in rehabilitative settings by assessing the environment through the Clinical Tutor Competence Scale (CTCS). CTCS tests baseline competencies of clinical tutors, followed by specific training sessions. The study adopts a mixed-method approach to provide continuous assessment, involving both students and nurses participating in the project. Data collection includes semi-structured interviews for qualitative insights, along with two validated surveys—the Clinical Learning Quality Evaluation Index (CLEQI) and the CTCS at follow-up—for quantitative analysis. Results: The expected outcomes of the study aim to benefit students, clinical tutors, and the organizational framework by enhancing both the quality of learning and the care provided. Changes in organizational practices between the two sites might influence the implementation and monitoring stages of the project. Conclusion: The findings of this study are anticipated to boost student competencies in accordance to Dublin descriptors, addressing numerous challenges in the nursing profession and providing benefits to both students and patients. This is reportedly the first study of its kind in Italy.
