In the surviving elegies of Critias, the etiological element has a very important role; sometimes it become the description of the πρῶτος εὑρετής, and it seems to be an innovative feature without parallel in the archaic poetry. This aspect, which is specific to the author as we can verify from the poems we have, represents a further proof of the close link between the literary practice and the public role of the Athenian politician.
