In the years, several events affected food trade. Among them, the so called Cucumber Crisis, happened in 2011, and the Horsemeat Scandal, that took place at the beginning of 2013. The paper focuses on the two occurrences, drawing a comparison between them and trying to find out common and differentiating elements. In this perspective, specific attention is paid to understand what a food safety crisis is, and which happenings cannot instead be classified as “crises”. The investigation then moves towards the understanding of how the EU Commission might run a food crisis and the consequences that such management can produce over EU and non-EU economy. Emphasis is thus given to the perception of the effects that the definition of “unsafe food” given by Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 may originate. The paper ends with some considerations about consumers’ reply to crises (or to events that are presented as crises).

Abstract
The paper ends with some considerations about consumers’ reply to crises (or to events that are presented as crises).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
