The paper deals with the distribution of the name “Jesus” in Iberia, after noticing the fact the Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries are the only ones attesting such a name as the available possibilities to naming children. Such a phenomenon is historicized in the period of the so-called Reconquista (ca. 720–1492 CE), thus the progressive collapse of the kingdom of Al-Andalus (Arabized Iberia). The taboo of the sacred name of Jesus is discussed comparatively with other Christian traditions and it is explained as a neutralization, thanks to the approach of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. Then, there are developed some consideration for the situation of the name “Jesus” in the Modern and Contemporary Ages within the same theoretical framework and the aid of historical methods.
