The paper aims to outline the development of Reinhold’s thinking from a Bardilian understanding of philosophizing to a new critical approach. On the base of the correspondence between Reinhold and Fries from 1806-1808, it is shown that Reinhold’s position is also the result of his dispute with Fries. Reinhold remains a strong critic of the New Critique, but recognizes some of Fries’ transcendental themes and develops them into a point of view from which the question of truth can be answered.

Abstract
