The volume of Giuseppe Campori (1821-1887), Italian and Foreign Artists in the Este Territories (Modena, 1855), is the first list of all foreign painters working in the Este territories, based on two types of sources: archive and guides. But how are the latter reliable when they describe the works of Nordic artists? What place is reserved for these painters with unpronounceable names and brushes that are difficult to catalog? The contribution will address the case of Flemish artists in the historical guides of the cities of the Este territories through some examples, from Ferrara with Giovanni Vangembes (Jan Van Beyghem) to Modena with Giovanni Vangheldri (Jan Van Gelder).
