The essay analyses Jacques Maritain's thought on the issue of peace and war. During the Second World War and in the years characterized by the division of the world in two power blocks, Maritain dedicated numerous writings and speeches to identify the way to achieve peace. Unlike many contemporaries, he did not believe that this objective could be achieved by questioning the concept of just war in a speculative way, but only through a slow and complex process to be developed on historical ground. Maritain firmly believed that protagonists of such a process could only have been the peoples, who in his opinion had been able to keep their moral resources intact even in the most dramatic phases of the world conflict.
