Abstract

Aging induces a reduction of cognitive flexibility, which is often related to the development and progression of cognitive decline. With the purpose of maintaining brain functions, several non-pharmacological interventions are developed for attenuating such decline, such as education, physical exercise and stimulating activities. The attention given to the impact of bilingualism on cognitive reserve and healthy aging has increased recently due to the growing population of older adults and the need to address age-related cognitive disorders. Learning a foreign language is being explored as a potential tool to stimulate cognitive capabilities and promote healthy aging. On the other side, Social Assistive Robotics (SARs) has been shown to have a positive impact on seniors’ engagement and participation in cognitive training. In this paper, we present the development of a course on English language for seniors in the cooking domain using the Alpha Mini social robot and we propose and discuss a study to test the effect and efficacy of the proposed approach.
