In his famous speech given on September 6th, 1943, on the occasion of receiving an honorary degree from Harvard University, Winston Churchill clearly stated the political importance of fostering the widespread diffusion of English in the world. Within the lecture Churchill revealed his interest in ‘Basic English’, a form of planned language proposed in the late Twenties of the last century by Charles Kay Ogden. In the present contribution, the above-mentioned speech is discussed, with an analysis of its main points, a contextualization in their time and, whenever possible, a rereading of them in the light of the contemporaneity.

Il 6 settembre 1943, in occasione del ricevimento della laurea honoris causa presso la Harvard University, Winston Churchill, nel celebre discorso tenuto per l’occasione, presenta con chiarezza il suo pensiero sull’importanza politica della scelta linguistica di promuovere capillar mente la diffusione della lingua inglese nel mondo. In tale intervento emerge anche il suo interesse per il ‘Basic English’, forma di pianificazione proposta alla fine degli anni Venti del secolo scorso da Charles Kay Ogden. Nel presente contributo si presenta tale speech discutendone gli snodi principali, contestualizzandolo nel suo tempo e rileggendolo, se e dove possibile, alla luce della contemporaneità.
