The essay examines the political connections, the power relationships and the networks of relationship between Tuscany and Spain in the broader framework of the European policy of the seventeenth century. Through originals archival sources, it examines the actions of the emissaries of Tuscany in Spain and also the Spanish presence in Florence during the long period of time of the Grand Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany (1621-1670) and the almost contemporary of Philip IV of Spain (1621-1665). The change in the balance between states in Europe, with the decline of Spain after the Peace of Westphalia, is perceived also in the political choices of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany who instruct their ambassadors to approach new powers and change the behavior in relation to Spain.
