Starting from the clipeus of the facade of the cathedral of San Giorgio in Ferrara, the contribution proposes some reflections on the motif of images in clipeus in the Middle Ages, questioning whether it is not an element of discontinuity. Through many examples, known and less known from the Po Valley area, the reflection moves around the problem of the persistence of motifs considered classical during and after the Middle Ages.

Abstract

Starting from the clipeus of the facade of the cathedral of San Giorgio in Ferrara, the contribution proposes some reflections on the motif of images in clipeus in the Middle Ages, questioning whether it is not an element of discontinuity. Through many examples, known and less known from the Po Valley area, the reflection moves around the problem of the persistence of motifs considered classical during and after the Middle Ages.
