«L’anno del gran ritorno»: il ventiquattresimo Giubileo (1950) e i pellegrinaggi a Roma

Tourism and its transformations in the postwar era have sparked a growing interest in economic history studies. During this crucial period, tourism took fundamental steps in acquiring mass dimensions and intensifying its involvement in the Western world’s dynamics of socio-economic development. In 1950, in Rome, the capital of a country about to become a leader in world tourism in the second half of the twentieth century, an ancient pilgrimage tradition was renewed: the Jubilee. This article represents the First historical reconstruction of the economic and tourist dynamics of that event: it illustrates the 1950 Jubilee’s international dimension as well as its impact on the infrastructures of the capital of Christianity.
