«È matto come suo padre»: devianza giovanile e internamento nella Toscana del secondo Settecento

This paper illustrates some events about childhood and early youth of famous adventurer and polemicist Giorgio Libri-Bagnano (1781-1836), detained in Florence at the age of sixteen in 1798 on the orders of Grand Duke Ferdinand III Habsburg-Lorraine and then transferred to a convent by the request of his family to be re-educated in application of a ius corrigendi still in force despite the closure of House of Correction in Florence on 1794. Police and judicial records compared with family correspondence sheds light on relationships between parents and children, on criteria for defining deviant behaviour in childhood and youth and on practice of internment in a convent as a means of re-education during transition between Old Regime, Revolution and Napoleonic era.
