Background Many literature studies described the presence of psychoaffective disturbances in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients, by using a number of different psychiatric instruments. Unfortunately, there are still many controversial and unclear issues on this complex relationship, can which related to taxonomic and practical limits, existing in literature, of clinical and psychiatric evaluation on TMD-patients. Interesting findings were recently reported with the use of instruments based on the newly introduced concept of psychopathological spectrum on TMD subjects. Therefore, the aim of the current work was to assess TMD patients by means of an instrument allowing the entire spectrum evaluation: the General Five-Spectrum Measure (GSM-V), a brief self-report test for the spectrum of major disorders of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Axis I (DSM-IV).
