A very high cycle fatigue regime (i.e. from 107 to 109 cycles) is attracting ever increasing attention for its industrial importance. Significant efforts have been recently devoted to material characterization and improvement of test methods. Original fatigue results in the very high cycle regime obtained with two high-strength materials, a martensitic bearing steel and an austempered ductile iron, are presented. Several experimental and material aspects, such as the role of specimen size, type of specimen loading, load testing frequency and material strength, are introduced and discussed. Typical mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation found in the very long life fatigue regime are also discussed.
