The production and trade of wine underwent deep changes in nineteenth century Italy. In Lombardy the adoption of new methods and practices was related to the process of urbanization, to social change and to the revolution in transports. While the latter was instrumental in freeing trade from geographical restraints, scientific advance was a decisive factor in overcoming traditional and irrational methods of production and improving the quality and reliability of wines produced in the Ol- trepò. Producers and tradesmen associated to promote long-range trade by railroad and oversea export, extending as far as South America.
