This brief article aims to present some perspectives and possibilities for the history of education between the 15 th and 17th -century. More in detail, here we would elaborate especially on two arguments: i) the necessity for the researcher to go beyond the realm of education itself in choosing sources, because early modern educational culture was not self-sufficient and did not consider education as a main subject. Therefore, it is necessary to be curious and master various genres and themes to find meaningful sources; the role of the body in 16th -century education will be taken as an example of this necessity; ii) even if Italy was only scarcely affected by the Reformation, the educational thought of the late Renaissance and early Baroque era was primarily conceived as a reaction and a competitor to the powerful pedagogical drive of the German Reformation. Therefore, a deep knowledge of Reformation education is necessary to understand the novelty and richness of many educational institutions of the era, including the colleges managed by Catholic religious orders, such as the Jesuits. We will conclude proposing to apply the concept of “intersectionality” to Renaissance and early modern studies, going beyond its primary goal to highlight and explain discrimination and bias and using it as a tool to understand the complexity of social representations determining educational processes in different roles and social classes.
