The article offers an analysis of the foundational modes of pedagogical teleologies. Following an explanation of the importance of aims and goals within the theories of education, the article proposes the analysis of three twentieth-century authors who are significant for the argument at hand, as they built their pedagogies, albeit differently, by identifying the ends of education: starting from the psychological description of the human subject at its different ages (René Hubert), its “nature” as defined by philosophy (Mario Casotti), or the social consensus found in social groups of reference (Anton S. Makarenko). On the basis of this analysis, the article identifies three formal ways for constructing pedagogical teleologies (autotelic, endotelic and exotelic), and discusses their potentialities and limits.
