Le relazioni anglo-romane sotto il pontificato di Leone XII (1823-1829)

When the newly elected pope Leo XII announced by a personal letter to the British monarch his own accession to the Papacy, king George IV left him with no answer. Actually, legal obstacles did still not allow the United King- dom to entertain regular relations with the bishop of Rome and the Roman Curia. Nevertheless, such a fact would not have precluded a quite informal collaboration between the two courts. First of all, Anglo-Roman pourparlers about a catholic emancipation in the United Kingdom took a pivotal place within their relations and this gave also opportunity to discuss other more or less related questions, such as the Irish one. Leo expired just before the accomplishment of the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829, but he certainly could be able to benefit from the trust of the British government in order to achieve this great goal for the Roman Catholic subjects of Great Britain and Ireland.

La mancata risposta di re Giorgio IV alla lettera con la quale Leone XII annunciava la propria elevazione al soglio di Pietro non ostacolò il lungo processo di normalizzazione delle relazioni tra Londra e la capitale della Cristianità. Se infatti secolari impedimenti legali non consentivano ancora al Regno Unito di tenere regolari rapporti con il “Vescovo di Roma” e la curia romana, tuttavia una del tutto informale collaborazione tra la corte di Roma e quella di San Giacomo rimase aperta su vari fronti. In primo luogo, i pourparler intorno ad una ormai prossima emancipazione dei cattolici del Regno Unito occuparono le relazioni anglo-romane di quegli anni e offrirono anche l’occasione per la discussione di altre, più o meno connesse, questioni, come quella irlandese. Leone XII non sarebbe arrivato a vedere compiuto il Roman Catholic Relief Act del 1829, ma era stata certamente la fiducia che il papa aveva saputo ispirare al governo inglese a contribuire alla realizzazione di quella fondamentale legge.
