The formation of fracture or slip surfaces in brittle or perfectly-plastic bodies, respectively, is predicted by the minimization of a two field free-energy functional as in classical phase-field models. This formulation is here generalized by considering functionals that differ only for the elastic part that is converted into surface energy, providing a wide range of responses.
