The essay aims to retrace the complex exhibition history of two multimedia devices designed by Ettore Sottsass and Umberto Bignardi in the late Sixties for Olivetti. A reconstruction that was made difficult not only by the almost complete destruction of the materials these gigantic apparatuses were built of, but by their very modular nature, which enabled them to operate differently depending on the chosen setting. In the Seventies, once their more commercial function ended, the modes of operation of the two machines would allow their re-use in the artistic field. By focusing on the ‘hardware’ and on the ways in which they were continuously recalibrated to different social and national contexts (including the audiovisual ‘software’), thematic and methodological continuities between the corporate and artistic ‘non-theatrical’ fruitive modes are highlighted.
Il saggio si pone l’obiettivo di ritracciare la complessa storia espositiva di due dispositivi multimediali progettati da Ettore Sottsass e Umberto Bignardi per l’Olivetti alla fine degli anni Sessanta. Una ricostruzione resa ardua non soltanto dalla quasi completa distruzione dei materiali che componevano questi giganteschi apparati, ma dalla loro stessa natura modulare, che li rendeva diversamente operativi a seconda dell’occasione di allestimento. Terminata la loro funzione più propriamente commerciale, l'ecologia progettuale alla base delle due macchine ne permetterà, all'inizio degli anni Settanta, il reimpiego in ambito artistico. Concentrando l’attenzione sugli oggetti “contenitori” e sul modo in cui venivano continuamente ricalibrati rispetto ai diversi contesti sociali e nazionali (ivi compresi i “contenuti” audiovisivi) si evidenziano continuità, tematiche e metodologiche, tra le modalità fruitive non-theatrical corporative e quelle artistiche.
