Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a practical and readily tolerated means for noninvasive study of CNS. We carried out different approaches, each carrying peculiar results. To determine whether higher cognitive functions, namely attention and memory, may be modified by TMS, normal subjects underwent a battery of tests in control conditions and during low frequency TMS. The specific tasks included Stroop Test, picture and word recall (p-w R), whereas sites of stimulation were pre-frontal or temporo-parietal areas. Measurements of reaction time, errors and interference showed that TMS of the prefrontal area significantly enhanced the attentive performance. On the other hand, a worsening in p-w R (working memory) was registered when posterior areas were stimulated. Results demonstrate that TMS may be useful in elucidating information processing from anterior to posterior areas of the brain.
