The paper analyses the accessibility concept, as developed in the International literature, to focus on the role of accessibility planning in contemporary cities, as area of intersection between land use and the mobility system. Within this framework, the paper provides some critical considerations on possible tools that can be used today to support the planning process, and to outline the main strategies, challenges, and opportunities for accessibility policies. Those strategies inevitably require a rediscovery of the proximity principles in the planning practice. They could be applied, in the contemporary city, to widespread urban regeneration interventions of the consolidated fabric, and could also draft new scenarios on the role of accessibility in the Smart city of tomorrow.

Abstract
The paper analyses the accessibility concept, as developed in the International literature, to focus on the role of accessibility planning in contemporary cities, as area of intersection between land use and the mobility system. Within this framework, the paper provides some critical considerations on possible tools that can be used today to support the planning process, and to outline the main strategies, challenges, and opportunities for accessibility policies. Those strategies inevitably require a rediscovery of the proximity principles in the planning practice. They could be applied, in the contemporary city, to widespread urban regeneration interventions of the consolidated fabric, and could also draft new scenarios on the role of accessibility in the Smart city of tomorrow.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
