On April 30, 357, Constantius II came to Rome for the first time, and only one month later he left for Illyria, in an expedition against Suebi, Quadi and Sarmatae undertaken in spring 358, where he earned for the second time the cognomen of Sarmaticus. Contemporary criticism generally tends to downsize the scope of Costantius’ foreign policy, also in the Pannonian region; yet, still in the end of the seventeenth century the Sarmatic campaign of 358 was celebrated by Tillemont «entre les choses les plus mémorables de l’histoire de Constance». The paper ends with the hypothesis that the Second panegyric on Constantius (= Oratio, III Bidez), written between the end of summer 358 and the beginning of spring 359, may have been precisely addressed by the Caesar Julian to the celebration of the Sarmatic triumph of his Augustus at Sirmium.

Abstract
On April 30, 357, Constantius II came to Rome for the first time, and only one month later he left for Illyria, in an expedition against Suebi, Quadi and Sarmatae undertaken in spring 358, where he earned for the second time the cognomen of Sarmaticus. Contemporary criticism generally tends to downsize the scope of Costantius’ foreign policy, also in the Pannonian region; yet, still in the end of the seventeenth century the Sarmatic campaign of 358 was celebrated by Tillemont «entre les choses les plus mémorables de l’histoire de Constance». The paper ends with the hypothesis that the Second panegyric on Constantius (= Oratio, III Bidez), written between the end of summer 358 and the beginning of spring 359, may have been precisely addressed by the Caesar Julian to the celebration of the Sarmatic triumph of his Augustus at Sirmium.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
