Giant colonic diverticulum (GCD) is a very rare complication of diverticulosis as approximately only 150 cases have been described thus far. Diagnosis is usually obtained through plain X-ray or CT scan of the abdomen: characteristically, they show an intra-abdominal gas-filled cyst greater than 4 cm in size, which is often indicated as ‘balloon sign’.
