Elastic optical networks have assumed so far that each optical signal is transmitted along a dedicated frequency slot, avoiding any frequency overlap with other optical signals. In this paper, an overlap technique enabling uncorrelated optical signals to be superimposed over the same spectrum resources is presented, validated by simulations, and discussed in the framework of Software Defined Network (SDN) architectures. The overlap technique opens the way for new spectrally efficient networking solutions, including specifically designed routing strategies, new recovery schemes and innovative de-fragmentation techniques.

Abstract

Elastic optical networks have assumed so far that each optical signal is transmitted along a dedicated frequency slot, avoiding any frequency overlap with other optical signals. In this paper, an overlap technique enabling uncorrelated optical signals to be superimposed over the same spectrum resources is presented, validated by simulations, and discussed in the framework of Software Defined Network (SDN) architectures. The overlap technique opens the way for new spectrally efficient networking solutions, including specifically designed routing strategies, new recovery schemes and innovative de-fragmentation techniques.
