Abstract

We present the fabrication and characterization of a Nd3+-doped double clad phosphate glass optical fibre manufactured by preform drawing, with the preform being obtained by rod-in-tube technique. Laser action at 1.054 micron was demonstrated by cladding pumping 9 cm of the fabricated optical fibre using a semiconductor pigtailed laser diode emitting at 793 nm. A maximum output power of 85 mW was obtained with a slope efficiency of 18% with respect to the launched pump power.
