The earthquake that hit Emilia in May of 2012 involved hundreds of houses and several historic buildings. After an initial period of intensive housing reconstruction to allow citizens to leave tent cities, it is time to reconstruct the history and its architectural remains. Among the many buildings affected, particularly in the zone of Modena, the Theatre of Finale Emilia (MO) is one of the most interesting. The Theatre stands almost opposite the old eighteenth-century theatre and presents a facade of three bodies, of which the two side ones are lower and protruding, and topped by curved tympanums with a Art Nouveau style decoration. The Gallery, stages and orchestra are accessible through the rectangular Atrium by two staircases. The mixed-styles solution proposes a compromise between the tradition of the Italian theatre, which offers excellent acoustics, common in the territory of Emilia in the form of “palchetti” theatre, and the French innovation of the gallery as a continuous balcony. Following the earthquake, the building suffered serious injuries. The roof, in particular, has suffered a slip of tiles that caused major phenomena of rainwater filtration inside the structure. This can be seen both in the area immediately below the roof (the attic) and inside the building, because the wooden false-ceiling, which separates the attic from the orchestra, was heavily damaged. In addition, other injuries can be observed, such as damage to partitions, serious cracks due to the detachment of the perimetral walls from the shear walls, the breach of the tympanum caused by the roof-trusses pressure, and the stucco deterioration in the stages area. For this reason, the Municipality anticipated some temporary works, aimed to the theatre safety, consisting in roof prop up, temporary tie-rod and roof waterproofing. It should be noted that, even if the provisional measures have preserved the building from increasing damage level, water infiltration resulted in an overall and extended deterioration of finishes, decorations and furnishings. For this reason, the Administration had to provide a complete project for the safety, improvement, repair, restoration, and functional recovery of the Theatre to ensures a complete repair of the damages caused by the earthquake and to grant public usability.
