Abstract

The authors describe the mechanism of hydrochloric acid induced biological damage to esophagus, gastric and duodenal mucosa. Various experimental models in animals and in vivo are considered and commented. Is considered the lesion induced by an excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid; by an anomalous response of mucus-bicarbonate barrier, surface epithelium and submucosal blood flow; by exogenous factors as alcohol and drugs. In particular a better knowledge of pathophysiology is important contribute towards therapy.
