L'immunofluorescenza diretta come ausilio diagnostico per le patologie del cavo orale

OBJECTIVES. The present paper describes the direct immunofluorescence (DIF) technique as a possible diagnostic aid in several immune-mediated disorders of the oral cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS. We conducted a narrative review of the current literature on DIF technique, from indication to interpretation of the results. RESULTS. DIF may be requested whenever a clinician suspects an immune- mediated disease affecting the oral mucosa. These disorders typically have overlapping clinical and histopathological features. Biopsy site selection, biopsy technique and mode of specimen transport to the laboratory are crucial to obtain reliable results of DIF exam. CONCLUSIONS. DIF is a valuable diagnostic tool requiring high specialization and training.
