The knowledge of the city, the preliminary step for each conservative or transformative action on it, is based on its rigorous analysis. For years, this has been supported by the cartography, a regional scale, and by the urban survey, at the city scale. Since the nineteenth century, the expressive ability of designers to convey qualitative information through the plans, has been gradually replaced by standardized representations, more accurate but lacking in details. The UNI7310/1974 law sought to introduce a complete code, but it is not suited to the new forms of representation arising from the virtual modelling. Three-dimensional views and videos of the city are quickly increasing, thanks to new technological tools, to meet the needs of urban and infrastructural planning, various types of analysis of phenomena such as pollution and energy, life cycle analysis, smart city strategies, urban management, historic reconstructions and many others. The paper aims to investigate the specific category of the 3D cataloguing of disused urban spaces, as administrative instrument for their redevelopment. This analysis is applied to the city of Parma.
