Abstract

The recently increased confidence with more and more likely representations at the urban scale is due to the interactive navigation of 3D imagery via browser, the dissemination of webGIS viewers with simplified interface and the introduction of 3D data. Although today the expeditious use of photogrammetric survey tools allows capturing large amounts of data, the heavy post-production work makes them unsuitable for the production of urban models, if not justified by historical and artistic value and of the built heritage. However, analysis, design and planning increasingly require verisimilar visualization of “what-if” scenarios. Recently, some software made possible to combine opengeodata from multiple sources to automatically build a three-dimensional model to be used as a basis for work on the city. The paper is intended to highlight the potential and the criticality of these tools applied to the analysis and monitoring of the existing city, through the critical eye of the urban survey.
