Within Claudel’s production, the collection "Corona benignitatis anni Dei", published in 1915, marks both an attempt at a metrical renewal, through a return to rhyme and regular verse, and a search for a reviving inspiration, through a rediscovery of medieval liturgical drama. Even though the various poems composing this collection may appear, at a first sight, feebly connected with the theme of war, the poet’s ideas about this issue is present in most of them. In fact, in writing the Corona, Claudel’s intention was to show his contemporaries that, even in a time of distress, such as the war period, hope could be possible thanks to Christ’s sacrifice. If war produces separation, the peace offered by Jesus Christ represents a new promise of harmonious cohabitation.
