Objectives. The aim of the present paper is to review the current understanding of facial aging across medical and dental fields. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase e Google Scholar, by matching the key word "facial aging" with the following key words: facial anatomy, dentistry, orthodontics, maxil lofacial surgery, aesthetic medicine, psychology. RESULTS. 114 papers were included in the present review. Proportions, harmony, regularity, volume restoration, uniformity of skin texture/colour, natural look of both hard and soft tissues are the endpoints of modern aesthetics and of the current aesthetic procedures in terms of facial aging. CONCLUSIONS. A new aesthetic of facial ageing is emerging in facial disciplines, and a different construct is now guiding both dental and medical procedures.
