Applying an original model of translation to Christine Brooke-Rose’s *Such*: Integrating Translation and Linguistics

The present article aims at exploring the complex and delicate process of translation, applying a new model to the novel Such, published by British author Christine Brooke-Rose in 1966. As my work demonstrates, although this novel represents perhaps an extreme case, in that it is very demanding on more than one level, the model of translation suggested here can help in the realization of an effective target text. Indeed, as my work intends to demonstrate, any effective model of translation should necessarily draw on linguistics and the many branches of language studies: from discourse analysis to sociolinguistics, componential analysis, the analysis of specialized languages, corpus linguistics and various computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. Because of this, the translation process (of this particular novel as well as other texts) has as much to do with linguistics as it does with literature, with technolects and with poetry. Indeed, as this paper demonstrates, the model might be easily applied to non-literary textual types too, and by focusing on both the verbal and the non-verbal components of the text, it aims at rendering the approach to any kind of (interlinguistic, intersemiotic etc.) translation more systematic.
