A numerical procedure based on nonlinear finite element analyses (NLFEA) is developed herein to model the behavior of tunnel linings exposed to fire conditions. To this aim, a sequentially-coupled thermal-stress analysis is performed, by linking a heat-transfer analysis with a nonlinear structural simulation that considers concrete degradation due to high temperature, as well as the interaction between tunnel lining and the surrounding ground. The effect of concrete spalling on fire-induced stress distribution is also investigated in a simplified way, by incorporating a progressive removal of finite elements, which allows the simulation of lining thickness reduction when exposed to high temperatures. Two different criteria for element removal are herein investigated, that is the enforcement of a predefined spalling scenario with time or the reaching of a critical temperature in the inner concrete layers. Finally, their effectiveness is properly discussed.
