From late 1978 to February 1979, the Italian media were particularly interested in the Islamic Revolution in Iran. These events and the anomalous Islamist-led rebellion above all surprised the Italian party newspapers and journals: if Communists were pleased to see a revolution against the Shah, Italian Christian-Democrats were deeply worried about the overthrow of the major US Middle East ally against the Soviets; in the middle, Socialists were both attracted and suspicious about the outcome of the revolution. In this paper, several articles from Italian party-owned newspapers will be analysed, in order to show the different views on the Islamic revolution.
