Prompted by De Giacinto's dichotomy between scientific/theoretical and expressive language in pedagogical discourse, we try to analyze Marsilio Ficino's educational thought following the same guidelines. We focus on "El Libro dell'Amore", his reworking of Plato's "Convivium" in literary 15-th century vernacular, sketching the implications of the core role of socratic love as educational path, its alleged utility for civic life. The adoption of teacher-pupil love as main educational force places the lyrical, expressive language of Italian poetry (as revived in Florence by Poliziano) as the privileged language of education; but its strong philosophical implications, on one side, and the highly conventional features of poetry at the time, on the other, make the choice for expressive language far more nuanced.
