CoDE is an actor-based software framework that provides the suitable features for both simplifying the development of large and distributed complex systems and guarantying scalable and efficient applications through the use of replaceable implementations of its runtime components. In particular, this software framework has been experimented in the development of agent based modeling and simulation applications. The results of the experimentation show that the actor model is a suitable means for modeling agents and that an appropriate configuration and customization of the runtime components of the software framework can both support efficient and scalable agent based modeling and simulation applications and provide the services necessary for gathering the data necessary to the tools supporting such kind of applications.
