The first decades in the history of Jesuit college theatre are the most interesting and experimental phases of this educational and artistic phenomenon. A comparative study of the plays of some major Jesuit playwrights of the time (Venegas, Benci, Stefonio) reveals the artifices of a didactic of passions, where solidarity inside the Order, heroic temperament and attitude to self-sacrifice are fostered by a reviving of the ideal of socratic love and Platonic four furores, shaped in order to fit Biblical plots and the need for a more essoteric communication aimed at wider civic audiences.

Abstract
The first decades in the history of Jesuit college theatre are the most interesting and experimental phases of this educational and artistic phenomenon. A comparative study of the plays of some major Jesuit playwrights of the time (Venegas, Benci, Stefonio) reveals the artifices of a didactic of passions, where solidarity inside the Order, heroic temperament and attitude to self-sacrifice are fostered by a reviving of the ideal of socratic love and Platonic four furores, shaped in order to fit Biblical plots and the need for a more essoteric communication aimed at wider civic audiences.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
