Faust is undoubtedly an important figure in European culture, since he influenced the cultural imaginary even out German frontiers. In XXth century French Literature, Faust has produced different interpretations, from which emerges, because of its originality, the one given by Paul Valéry, illustrated in the present essay by Simonetta Valenti.
