Camille Mauclair's metalinguistic reflection shows the debt that this disciple of Stephane Mallarmé had towards his master. Language is in fact one of the aspects on which Mallarmé's theorical reflection not only was most focused, but also one of the aspects which manifested his elegant and conscient manipulation of words. Mauclair revists in the light of Mallarmé's poetics the history of French Symbolism and of its innovations, till the discovery of "vers libre".
